Top 10 Clash Royale Tips For Beginners
Clash Royale is a mashup of a collectible card game, an MOBA, and an RPG. It’s the latest game from Supercell, the ones that brought you Clash of Clans, and it uses the same characters that we’ve all come to know and love. It’s the next big thing on mobile, and if you’re not playing already, you will be soon.
Here’s our top 10 tips for beginners who are just starting out in the game:
1. Don’t Spam The Cards
Elixir management is a major part of this game. If you don’t have elixir, you can’t spawn new cards on the field. So be careful and considered in what you place and when. Let your bar fill up first so you can see what your opponent is going to do, and deploy countermeasures where necessary. Nothing is worse than being out of elixir and staring down the barrel of a Skeleton Army.
2. Mix Up Your Deck
Having all high power cards in your deck may seem cool, but not when it means waiting 20 seconds between deploying cards. Keep a couple low elixir cards in your deck so you can always have ways of stopping a Prince charge, stalling a Skeleton Army, or back up your successful push on a tower.
3. Combine Your Troops
No one troop is the best in this game… but there are lots of awesome combinations that do a lot of damage. So figuring out good combinations of troops is key based on your cards. Test out deploying multiple troops at once, or in different orders, and build out your deck with these combinations in mind. There’s a lot of strategies here, and the game is constantly evolving. We will cover many Clash Royale Strategies later on. But in combination with this…
4. Spawn Near The Back Of The Field
You don’t always need to spawn your troops near the front. Sometimes it’s good to spawn your troops near the back of the field so you can have more time to combine multiple cards. Also, in the early game, while you wait for your opponent to play a card, you can buy yourself more time by playing a low-cost card near the back of the field.
5. Spend Less Elixir Than Your Opponent
It might sound obvious, but it’s something to think about with every card you play. When your opponent plays a card, you can react with a cheaper card to stall the attack while your towers finish him off. Or sometimes you may not even want to spend any elixir on a troop to defend and just let your tower take a little bit of damage instead to give you a leg up on your next attack.
6. Defense Is A Good Offense
Being reactive in Clash Royale can be a good thing. If your opponent throws a Prince card at you, react with a skeleton army once he nears your base. If he tosses a Goblin Barrel at you, lay down some Arrows before it lands to prevent them from doing much damage. If a Barbarian horde is coming, answer with some cheap little minions. If you can consistently defend against your opponent’s armies by using less elixir than he does, you will have a big edge when your window opens to push an attack.
7. Offense Is A Good Defense
Sometimes it’s fun to be the guy the others have to react to. So plan your attacks wisely and your opponent won’t have time to attack you since he’ll be busy defending. Throw down a skeleton bomber behind a Knight, and watch him clear the way for you. Or use a Giant as a meat shield while you deploy tons of Spear Goblins and Archers behind him to rain pain on anything ahead. Everybody knows that you throw down a Skelly Army to stop a Prince. But if you play your cards right you will have some Arrows ready to deploy to eliminate them as soon as they spawn, leaving your Prince to go all ‘guided missile’ on that undefended tower.
8. Watch TV Royale
Want to see what the best players in the game are doing, what cards they are using, and how they are combining them? Watch TV Royale replays to learn new techniques as the game’s meta is constantly changing and evolving.
9. Don’t Upgrade Things You’re Not Using
You should be saving your gold as much as you can and not wasting it by upgrading cards you aren’t playing with. Every 24 hours new cards become available to buy with gold, and you never know when that Epic card you’ve been waiting for (i.e. Xbow) will come up for 2,000 gold and you will be oh so happy you saved for it. You’ll get more gold and experience by donating your cards anyway once you join a clan. Which leads us to our last tip…
10. Join A Clan!
Not only is it fun to be in a clan, but you also receive to donate and receive cards which is a very fast way to level yourself up and enhance your deck’s power. Plus, just like in Clash of Clans, we are sure that soon there will be clan wars and lots of interesting loot and rewards from participating in those.
So there are our top 10 tips for newbies in Clash Royale. Don’t give up, even if you are on a losing streak. Learn from your mistakes, think of how to change your strategy to defend against different attacks. If you can’t get a Skeleton Army or a Dragon card early on, don’t fret, there are ways to defend, I promise. As you skill grows your trophies will too.

5 Clash Royale Strategy tips for beginners
1. Staying on top of trending strategies at Royale TV
TV Royale is an important section of Clash Royale, basically you get to watch replays of top global players battle it out with each other. The importance of watching replays is understanding what works, and what doesn’t! It’s also great to be the observer rather than playing it live action and experimenting.
And of course, since these are high-level players you’d probably won’t have access to cards they have, but it’s more of how they play their cards, where they place them, and what they have in their deck – for future references.
2. If you have a weak starting hand, be the person who starts second
Ash explains that if you start off with a weak hand which may be lower elixir troop cards (goblins, skeletons, archers etc) stick to defence until your higher level cards are in your hands. The reason for this is so that way you can see which tower/side your opponent is targeting for. Which in-case you’ll mount a strong defensive resistance, turning that into your offensive play.
3. Be efficient with your elixir
The purpose of being efficient with your elixir is to manage your troop summons. You don’t want to send too much troops or too few troops, for example – if your opponent’s tower health is 3/4 gone, you wouldn’t use prince (which cost 5 elixir) to destroy it when you have a giant in play. In contrast, if the opponent’s tower has full health, then sending out prince to help giant would be viable.
4. Even if you’re winning by 1, going offensive can be good
So by now your opponent know’s which side you’ll be going for when it comes to offensive, and is ready to send out 95% of their troops to that side to compensate for the destroyed tower. This is where you can go offensive and attack the other side with two of your strongest troops, while going on the defensive protecting your tower.
5. Build a well-balanced deck and then tweak from there!
Last but not least, building a well-balanced deck. The purpose of building a well-balanced deck is to get a feel of what cards work great with each other. It is recommended that you switch no more than 1-2 cards at a time, when optimising your battle deck.
Play Clash Royale Without Spending Any Money
A lot of people are bagging on Clash Royale saying that it is pay to win, but that’s not necessarily true, you don’t actually need to spend any money to be dangerous in the game. In fact, we postulate that not spending money actually makes you a better overall player!
Of course, there’s always going to be some professional gamer from China who pours hundreds or thousands of dollars into the game to get the most powerful cards and rarest items, but we’re not trying to compete with them (and really… why would you want to?) We just want to have a good time and be competitive with others in a more… reasonable manner. So, here’s a guide to playing Clash Royale without spending any real money at all.
Better Know Your In-Game Currency
There are two kinds of currencies- gold and gems. Gold is used to upgrade your units, pay for new matches, and also buy the occasional card outright when it comes up on sale each day. Gems are used to open chests early, buy more chests, and also (and this is key) buy more gold.
Three tips here to get the most out of your deck and the game without spending hard currency:
Save your gold!
Only use your gems to buy more gold!
Join a clan!
That’s it really. Let’s break it down:
1. Save Your Gold
Early on in the game you will be tempted to upgrade every card you get as soon as you can. Resist that urge. Save your gold, and only upgrade the cards you absolutely have to. Every day, a new Epic card comes on sale for 2000 gold, a rare card for 40 gold, and a common card for 5 gold. While you may get the cards you want from random chest drops, it’s always nice to have 2000 gold in reserve to buy that Epic card you’ve been waiting for.
Trust me, you’ll be glad you didn’t waste the gold on upgrading all those unused units when a Prince or XBow comes up for grabs in the market.
2. Only Buy Gold With Gems
Have patience with your chest timers as they cook away, and resist the urge to speed up their unlocks with more gems. If you aren’t going to spend money, you must learn and practice patience young padawan. What we do recommend spending your gems on is more gold. For 60 gems you can get 1000 gold, which is half of 2000, which is what you need to buy that specific epic card you really want. Everything else is for schmucks and fancy pants.
3. Join A Clan
Joining a clan at level 3 rewards you with a HUGE bonus of gems as an accomplishment (see rule 2 once you get those gems). Plus, once you join a clan you can request cards from your clan mates and get donations. You can also donate cards to your clan mates which, by the way, nets you more gold as a bonus. Plus it’s a whole lot more fun playing with friends and clan mates.
Players Who Don’t Spend Money Make Better Players
Playing Clash Royale without spending money means it will take more time in general to level up your deck and find all the cards you need. But don’t fret, this means you will have to make due with the cards you have and learn well rounded strategies and techniques with them to beat your foes. You won’t rely on having any specific Epic card, and will devise clever tactics for overcoming other player’s more powerful cards.
Remember- spending money in game does not necessarily make you a good player. However, not spending money in game will make you a scrappier player who can think creatively and deal with many different scenerios. As strategies come into favor by the more rich players, you will be ready to respond with your own scrappy strategies to fend them off and blow them out of the water. In short, players who don’t spend money on Clash Royale have the potential to be the best players in the game.

11 Clash Royale Tips
Here there are lots of tips for new and intermediate players of Clash Royale. This article is a work in progress and I’ll keep adding tips to the list when I have something more to add.
I’d appreciate if you would leave a comment if you have any tips for Clash Royale that I have not talked about already. Also, if you disagree with something, please let me know. Some of these tips might be a bit controversial, but it’s just my opinion after all.
1. Stick with your deck
Find a good deck and stick with it. Don’t keep changing cards around any time you loose. You’re not going to do great until you know the deck you are playing pretty well. It takes a while to figure out which card to play to counter the various troops your opponent is throwing your way.
2. Spent your gems wisely
Gems are hard to get in Clash Royale, so don’t waste them on random chests. Buy the first 4 common cards, first 2 rare and epic cards from the game shop only if you don’t have it already. Spend your gems on buying gold.
3. Learn about the cards
There is not a tons of stuff you need to know, but at least learn which cards are tanks, which are flying, which can target flying units and which will do splash damage. Just knowing this you can figure out how to counter most troops your opponent is sending your way. If you want a lot of information on how to counter the various troops this post on Reddit is really useful.
4. Avoid making mistakes
Most games are lost by the player that does the most stupid stuff. “Oops…I missed with my Fireball and now the Barbarians are crushing my tower.” There are tons of mistakes you can make, but just use your brain when you’re playing, don’t rush it and take a break if you’re pissed off.
5. Wait and be patient
Don’t make the first move, wait and see what your opponent is doing. Just placing all your troops down and hoping for the best rarely works. The most common result of doing that is that your opponent will kill all your troops and then approach your towers with a force you can’t handle.
Instead always be patient, the game is at least 3 minutes long so there is plenty of time. Even if your opponent has destroyed one of your towers being patient is probably your best option. The only time you should rush is if time is running out and you are far behind in the game.
6. Pay attention to elixir
Don’t spend all your elixir at one time unless you really have to. It really sucks running out of elixir and having to watch your opponent’s troops slowing hacking away at your tower. Especially during the first 2 minutes you have to be careful with this. During this time it takes a really long time to go from 0 to 10 elixir, so there is lots of time for your opponent to take advantage of your low elixir.
7. Get the Free chests
Play a little bit every day so you maximise the free chests you get. Doing this you will be able to level pretty fast without spending any money of the game. You get free chests and crown chests every day. You should also be able to open 5-6 of the timed chests daily as well.
8. Join a Clan
It’s a great idea to join a clan as soon as possible. The main reason is so that you can donate cards and get gold and experience, and also because your clan will donate cards to you. Doing this every single day makes you level up a lot faster than you would otherwise. If you’re lucky you land in a clan with some cool people as well, if not just find a new one. If you’re really good you can join the best clan in the game.
9. Play cards by dragging
Don’t tap where you want your troops to land, it’s much easier to drag the cards to the location on the map you want them to be played. The card is not played until you release your finger, and just holding it there for a while let you see exactly where it will land and what range the stationary cards will have. You can also play two cards at the same time doing this.
10. Watch the best players on YouTube
There are lots of great Clash Royale players posting their matches and instructional videos on YouTube. The two channels I would recommend is GamingWithMOLT and Chief Pat’s Channel.
11. Read the Clash Royale Reddit
The Clash Royale Reddit has a lot of useful information in it, deck guides, general strategy guide and lots of other useful information. You can also ask questions there and will most likely get great answers from experience players.
Get Gold Faster
How To Get Gold Faster
In Clash Royale, you can earn Gold for free by:
Opening Chests.
Donating Cards.
Assuming that you are a casual player in Arena 9…
Firstly, the easiest way to earn Gold in game is opening Chests (all chests, including the Tournament Chest). Attempt to open them whenever you can by playing a few battles in game every day to take all that easy and sweet money. You can get about 80 Gold from every free chest, meaning you can get about 320 Gold every day from opening Free Chest (2 in the morning and 2 before sleeping).
Donating is the other way to earn Gold in game.
Some players think it’s stupid to give the hard-earned cards away. Yes, it’s pretty hard to get them but you can get XP and 5 Gold for every donated common card and 50 Gold for every Rare. Also, you can get those donated cards back whenever you want. The Gold is not taken from the player getting cards from you. It’s just like you are selling cards but the buyers don’t have to pay.
Assuming that every day you donate 8 rares, which takes 80 spaces in total of the daily donation limit. The rest should be 160 commons (You can donate 240 card slots every day). Which means, you can get up to 8×50 + 160×5 = 1,200 Gold every day by donating card.
By donating, you can buy up to 4 Epic Card from the Store every week! That’s very crazy If you don’t want to get those free Epics since It’s much harder to get those cards than the donated ones.
To sum up, you can get up to 1,200×30 + 320×30 = 45,600 Gold every month = 1 Legendary Card.
Remember that I haven’t mentioned unlocking Silver, Gold, Giant, Magical, Super Magical and Tournament Chests yet.
Also, as long as you keep requesting cards, you can always take your cards back, so why not give them away, right? You can request 40 Commons or 4 Rares every day in Legendary Arena.

Get Filthy Rich
How To Get Filthy Rich
The economy of Clash Royale is as follows:
Ways to get mo money:
Opening chests
Donating cards
Ways to spend money:
Buying cards in the shop
So you want some mo money? Well, you get to open a free chest every 4 hours, silver chest every 3 hours or golden chest every 8 hours and crown chest every day. So open all your chests and get all that sweet money. No-brainer, right?!
The other way to get mo money is to donate. Donate, you say? Why would I give my hard-earned cards away? I’ll tell you! For mo money!!! When you donate a card you get xp and 5 gold. The gold is free, and not taken from the player getting the card. So it’s like you’re selling the card to your clanmate, but he’s not paying, Supercell are. You can donate up to 60 cards a day, making your potential earnings 300 gold a day. That’s 2100 gold, or an epic of your choosing from the store! You’d be crazy not to get that free epic. Free, you say? I’m giving my cards away! Sure, but you’re giving them to clanmates, and as long as you keep requesting, you get the cards back! You can request 10 commons at a time, three times a day, giving you 30 cards back. That’s what I do, keep requesting barbs, then keep donating them again. Everybody always need more barbs! And the way to get everyone in the clan filthy rich is to just keep passing those cards around. By not donating and requesting you are robbing your clanmates of their riches!
TLDR: Donate, donate, donate, request, donate more and more and moar!
Donating Rares count as 5 cards (towards your 24h 60 card donation limit) but nets you 50 gold. That’s double the gold you’d get from donating 5 Commons. So you can get up to 600 gold per day. (Theoretically, if your guild keep requesting rares.) That’s 4200 gold, or TWO EPICS, PER WEEK!!!
